Convenience stores have done well in the pandemic as customers avoided larger stores filled with people. Convenience stores are poised for major growth and the chains are experimenting with various formats. Some chains are exploring drive through options and many are focusing more on prepared foods and store-brand items that provide higher margins. Customer views are changing. Many perceive Wawa as much as a fast food provider as a gas station. There are 150,000 convenience stores in the US. Modest growth of 5% would indicate that 7,500 more locations will be needed in the near future.
